Valentine heart wineglass lampshade and cupcake toppers

Here’s a bit of fun for those who want to do something different to decorate for Valentine’s Day — a free wineglass lampshade! It’s a great way to spruce up for the holiday, even if you’re on a budget. Here are the steps to make it:

  1. Download the template artwork (see the link below)
  2. Print the template on card stock or paper
  3. Cut around the lampshade shape
  4. Glue or tape the back so ti forms a circle
  5. Place on the top of a wineglass
  6. Use some clear Museum Gel or something similar at the back of the lampshade to hold it to the glass (optional)

I used a clear wineglass, but for extra fun, you can use one with some color.

To make sure I didn’t burn the house down by getting a flame in touch with the paper shade, I used an extremely inexpensive LED tea light (three for $1 at the dollar store) instead of a candle. I strongly suggest you do the same. It’s not worth the risk to use a candle. And you get 60 hours out of one LED tea light, so you can use it plenty of times before it burns out.

cucpcake wrappers and toppers e-bookAs you can see from the photo, this lampshade design also has matching valentine heart cupcake toppers, and pink polka dot and heart wrappers, which are available in my new Printable Year-Round Cupcake Toppers and Wrappers Kindle e-book. For $2.99 you get the topper and two different wrapper designs shown here, plus 16 other seasonal toppers (Christmas, Hanukkah, Easter, St. Patrick’s Day, winter, summer, spring, fall and eight more), plus 41 other wrappers. It’s a ridiculously good deal that will give you toppers and wrappers for almost any seasonal occasion throughout the year.

The book contains all the printable files and instructions you’ll need to be creative all year! And don’t worry if you don’t have a Kindle or even any kind of tablet. You can use a FREE Kindle reading app to view the book on any device. Those apps also will allow you to view any Kindle book, not just mine.

Valentine's Day cupcakessThese Valentine’s Day heart cupcake toppers are not only free and printable, they’re also really versatile. The design comes in two looks: polka dots and a modern swirl; and in two valentine colors: red and magenta. They can be created to be used as two-dimensional hearts on toothpicks or on cocktail picks (they’re slightly larger than toothpicks and, at my grocery store anyway, can usually be found in varying lengths). They can also be made as 3D toppers by just folding the hearts in half with the printed side inwards and gluing them back-to-back. That part brings even more versatility, because you can mix and match the polka dots with the swirls. And to make even more variations, you can use a variety of ribbons tied around the toothpicks beneath the hearts to dress them up!

To give you an idea of the size of these party and cupcake picks toppers, I used mini cupcakes and decorated large marshmallows to display them in the photographs. I got the mini cupcakes from Whole Foods and I created the decorated marshmallows by using cookie icing (it dries harder and more solid than cake icing) and some cute valentine nonpariels I bought from Target. I also bought a spool of Valentine’s Day ribbon from Target. It contains just enough of each ribbon design to decorate two picks.

Here are some tips for making these valentine heart toppers:

  • Print the template, which can be downloaded below, using the heaviest card stock your printer will allow. I usually use matte card stock to make toppers but this time I used glossy. I liked the effect it gave, since these topper designs are modern.
  • For best results, use sharp, curved manicure scissors to cut out the hearts.
  • To make the 3D toppers, use a repositionable glue stick to stick the hearts together. Just fold the first of six hearts carefully (printed side in) and once it’s perfectly in half, score it with your fingernail to make a crease down the middle. Then, glue the first two pieces together and do the same with the two other sets. Let these dry, because repositionable glue takes a while to set. When these are dry, you can glue them together, leaving one panel open so you can insert the toothpick. Once you do, run a line of regular glue down the center, so the toothpick won’t slip out later. When that’s completed you can glue the last piece in place.

These designs started out their lives as Valentine’s Day cupcake picks, but I realized as I went along that they would also make great wedding, engagement party or bridal shower cupcake toppers. They could even be used as birthday parties, because there isn’t any writing on the design that indicates what occasion they’re for. So, if you’re a fan of heart, doves and butterflies, you can use these for a variety of events. And if you like shades of pink, you’re doubly in luck.

Like the other free toppers on this site, these come on an 8 1/2″ x 11″ .jpg sheet, which should print quite well at 100 percent.
