st-patricks-day-toppersThese cheerful St. Patrick’s Day party circles make terrific cupcake toppers, as you can see from the photo. but you can also use them to make banners, envelope seals, table scatters, or anything else your imagination can come up with.

They come in three designs: a green leprechaun hat with a gold buckle, a pot of gold with a shamrock on it and a four-leaf clover. The toppers are super simple to make. Just print them on your color printer, using a nice white card stock. If you’re not used to printing on card stock, make sure the stock you buy will work with your printer. You can usually get that information on the package, but if you don’t see it, ask at the store where you buy your paper.

Once the template is printed, just cut the circles with a circle cutter or punch. I personally use this punch but you can use any punch or cutting device you prefer. To make the picks, just tape or glue a toothpick or cocktail pick (which is slightly larger than a toothpick and available in most grocery stores) to the back. If you use glue, don’t use a lot, because it will warp the card stock.

cucpcake wrappers and toppers e-bookTo complete the effect and create a really polished look, I paired the circles with wrappers from my Printable Year-Round Cupcake Toppers and Wrappers e-book. As you can see in the photos, it has polka dot and herringbone designs in various shades of green, which can be paired with the circles. You could also use some of the other colors of wrappers, too, if you want to mix it up a bit.

The contents of the book can be used on any computer; you don’t need a Kindle, or any other kind of e-reader or tablet. Just download whichever of these FREE Amazon Kindle apps applies to you. There is an app for virtually any type of device or phone.

For those of us who live in America, these flower toppers are ideal for creating patriotic cupcakes for election day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, 4th of July, Veterans Day. And they are incredibly easy to make. Just download and print the template below on the thickest paper your printer will allow and cut carefully around the outline of the shapes. Manicure scissors with curved blades are perfect for this. If you don’t have any or yours are dull, I’ve found that using a fine Emory board on the edges of any scissors will help keep them sharp enough to get around the small curves in the template with ease.

The template can be used to make flat or three-dimensional toppers or picks. You can use one on a stick by itself, multiple of the same design for one pick, or mix and match the color schemes for one pick. Because of this, the three designs in the template can be used to create lots of different looks. And adding ribbons and bows in different colors and patterns, and rhinestones and glitter can extend the variety even more.

To make the 3D versions, just fold the desired number of cut flower petals (any number from four to 10 looks good) in half. Then, use repositionable glue stick on one half of the first petal. Glue the next folded petal to it, making sure to align all the edges before the glue dries. Glue as many as you want together and then place a line of liquid glue down the center where the folded edges meet. Lay a toothpick or cocktail pick (these are longer than toothpicks) in the glue, and then use the glue stick to seal the last two petal halves in place.

To make a flat version, simply lay a cut flower on a table, face down. Draw a thin line of liquid glue (glue that’s too thick will make the card stock warp), from the bottom center of the flower to about 3/4 of the way up. Then, lay a toothpick to cocktail pick in the glue, taking care to make sure it’s not crooked. Let it sit undisturbed until the glue is almost set. You can pick it up and check it at that point to see if you need to adjust it at all before it’s finally dry.

Valentine's Day cupcakessThese Valentine’s Day heart cupcake toppers are not only free and printable, they’re also really versatile. The design comes in two looks: polka dots and a modern swirl; and in two valentine colors: red and magenta. They can be created to be used as two-dimensional hearts on toothpicks or on cocktail picks (they’re slightly larger than toothpicks and, at my grocery store anyway, can usually be found in varying lengths). They can also be made as 3D toppers by just folding the hearts in half with the printed side inwards and gluing them back-to-back. That part brings even more versatility, because you can mix and match the polka dots with the swirls. And to make even more variations, you can use a variety of ribbons tied around the toothpicks beneath the hearts to dress them up!

To give you an idea of the size of these party and cupcake picks toppers, I used mini cupcakes and decorated large marshmallows to display them in the photographs. I got the mini cupcakes from Whole Foods and I created the decorated marshmallows by using cookie icing (it dries harder and more solid than cake icing) and some cute valentine nonpariels I bought from Target. I also bought a spool of Valentine’s Day ribbon from Target. It contains just enough of each ribbon design to decorate two picks.

Here are some tips for making these valentine heart toppers:

  • Print the template, which can be downloaded below, using the heaviest card stock your printer will allow. I usually use matte card stock to make toppers but this time I used glossy. I liked the effect it gave, since these topper designs are modern.
  • For best results, use sharp, curved manicure scissors to cut out the hearts.
  • To make the 3D toppers, use a repositionable glue stick to stick the hearts together. Just fold the first of six hearts carefully (printed side in) and once it’s perfectly in half, score it with your fingernail to make a crease down the middle. Then, glue the first two pieces together and do the same with the two other sets. Let these dry, because repositionable glue takes a while to set. When these are dry, you can glue them together, leaving one panel open so you can insert the toothpick. Once you do, run a line of regular glue down the center, so the toothpick won’t slip out later. When that’s completed you can glue the last piece in place.
