These free printable valentine heart cupcake picks toppers are really versatile. They come in two designs: a modern swirl and small polka dots; and two colors: magenta and red. They can be made as flat hearts on regular toothpicks or on larger cocktail picks. They can also be made as three dimensional toppers by just folding them in half and gluing them back-to-back. That part brings even more versatility, because you can mix and match the polka dots with the swirls. And to make even more variations, you can use a variety of ribbons tied around the toothpicks beneath the hearts to dress them up!

To give you an idea of the size of these party and cupcake picks toppers, I used mini cupcakes and decorated large marshmallows to display them in the photographs. I got the mini cupcakes from Whole Foods and I created the decorated marshmallows by using cookie icing (it dries harder and more solid than cake icing) and some cute valentine nonpariels I bought from Target. I also bought a spool of Valentine’s Day ribbon from Target. It contains just enough of each ribbon design to decorate two picks.

Here are some tips for making these valentine heart toppers:

• Print the template, which can be downloaded below, using the heaviest card stock your printer will allow. I usually use matte card stock to make toppers but this time I used glossy. I liked the effect it gave, since these topper designs are modern.
• For best results, use sharp, curved manicure scissors to cut out the hearts.
• To make the 3D toppers, use a repositionable glue stick to stick the hearts together. Just fold the first of six hearts carefully (printed side in) and once it’s perfectly in half, score it with your fingernail to make a crease down the middle. Then, glue the first two pieces together and do the same with the two other sets. Let these dry, because repositionable glue takes a while to set. When these are dry, you can glue them together, leaving one panel open so you can insert the toothpick. Once you do, run a line of regular glue down the center, so the toothpick won’t slip out later. When that’s completed you can glue the last piece in place.

I think I was born in the wrong decade, because I would have been so at home in the days when women wore long flowing gowns to formal dinner parties. (Never mind that they couldn’t vote and many weren’t even allowed to work, it was a visually beautiful time!) So this dinner party invitation is an homage to that more civilized time — but with modern twists. The periwinkle color scheme makes it a little more modern, as does the floral background. If periwinkle isn’t your thing and you’d like to change the color scheme, you can pop it into a graphics program, such as Photoshop Elements (Photoshop’s less expensive and easier to use sibling) or the free Pixlr.com program. Just use the “Hue and Saturation” settings to adjust the colors.

The overall design is subtle, and that’s on purpose. I wanted the final invitation to be soft and sophisticated. I hope you find it useful!

This 3rd birthday party invitation is in a generic but really cute (I think, anyway!) pastel purple and pale green color scheme. So you can use it for either a boy’s or a girl’s birthday party. It has a purple polka dot background with a really large “3,” just in case anyone is in doubt how old the birthday child will be. It also has a cheerful snail and bumble bee and the message, “Please Come to My 3rd Birthday Party.”

This 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ template is designed to fit in the standard A2 envelope size. Of course, you can make your invitations larger or smaller if you want to deliver them by hand or by e-mail. To prep them for e-mail, you can pop the image into a photo editor like Photoshop Elements, Picnik.com or Pixlr.com (the last two are free online applications). Once in there, add text for all the pertinent details in a layer over the image. You can then save the image and text combination to create a new .jpg or PNG file. Once you have that, you can insert it into your e-mail.

I’m of such a vintage that I was alive in the 1950s (at least at the very end of that decade), so this diner inspired 1950s retro party invitation design is close to my heart. And I particularly resonate with the diner aspect, because food just seems to taste better when you eat it in a silver metal tube with a long counter and red plastic seats! I’m not quite old enough to have actually eaten in a real 1950s diner but reinventions of them were quite the rage during the nostalgia boom when I was growing up in Los Angeles in the 1970s. I ate many a greasy hamburger, washed down by a vanilla milkshake.

This 5″ x 7″ horizontal invitation can be used for birthdays, anniversaries, girls or guys night out, retirement parties, and of course, reunions. I hope you find it useful!
