The owls are back! Or at least one of them is. In case you haven’t seen them, I made a collection of Halloween owls cupcake toppers back in 2012. You can see a photo of them below.

Well, I might be a little slow, but I finally got around to making a matching invitation. It features one of the cute owls, joined by some of his bat friends for All Hallows Eve. I just love the purple and orange color scheme, and the whimsical, magical look of this design.

In addition to this cute colorful example, and the ones in the toppers, in real life owls come in all shapes and sizes. If you look at the Wikipedia page on owls, you’ll see what I mean. My personal favorite is the laughing owl, which was probably the inspiration for the illustrator to create the images used in these designs (whether she knew it or not).  It has white around the eyes, just like the illustrations.

homemade Halloween owl decorationsThese four cute little Halloween owls were made to live on top of cupcakes, but I’ll bet you can find other uses for them too. I did. As you’ll see below, I attached them to a 3D Black balsa wood tree I bought at Michael’s Crafts. I combined the owls with some foam leaves I covered with glitter glue. I’m sure there must be an easier way to make glittery leaves though! I spent many hours on mine. I also added some cute glittery balls that had the same colors as the toppers. I used Art Minds Crafty Tack to attach everything to the tree. It’s the first time I’ve used it and I really liked it.

There was a lot of work involved, but I’m very pleased with the final result. As is the case with much of my photography, the real thing is much cuter than the photo!

July 2015 UPDATE: There’s now a matching FREE printable invitation!

Owls and tree Halloween decoration

To make the owls, you’ll need a sharp pair of scissors. I use curved manicure scissors but you can use whatever make you comfortable. Once the owls are cut, you can make toppers out of them by just putting a small amount of glue in a vertical line about halfway up the back, from the bottom up. Then, just lay a toothpick or party pick (which is slightly bigger than a toothpick) in the glue and let it dry.

These Halloween cupcake picks have scary themes like Frankenstein, Dracula, spiders and ghosts, but they’re not that scary at all. In fact, thanks to the bright orange and orchid purple color scheme, polka dots and the adorable illustrations by Lisa Craig-Mullins, they’re downright cute. They’re perfect for kids Halloween parties, but I think adults might find them useful too.

I know it’s a little early to be posting these, given that it’s actually two days before Memorial Day. But I’ve heard many people say that Halloween is their favorite holiday, so I know some of you die-hard fans are already be planning your Halloween parties!
